Retirees turn old stuff into new spending money

Red dishes on a table real life retirementReselling is popular with retirees.  So often they start reselling by selling off old stuff from around their homes or from garage and yard sales around their neighborhoods.

Collectible Seller.  Ebay is quite obvious and I almost hesitate to mention it, but the fact is that people (including me) do make money by becoming ebay sellers. Two retirees, Marge and Joan, both single women, began by cleaning out some odds and ends from their homes.

Earlier in their lives they would have given the items to charity, but as retirees on limited incomes they sold them on eBay. Their expert eyes in identifying good salable items–treasures among the junk–lead them to becoming authorities on collectible linens and china.  Now they search garage sales, tag sales and estate sales for new items to sell weekly.  Neither of them is retiring to a tropical island on the money they make but the extra cash comes in handy.  And they love searching through other people’s stuff.

They said the three secrets to Ebay success are:

1) identifying a niche and specializing in it and

2) selling brand name products whenever possible and

3) posting detailed photos of the merchandise and any flaws.

And they always have a good idea of how much money they can sell an item for before they buy it. If they doubt whether they can make a profit, they move onto another yard sale.  And there is always another yard sale!

They considered opening an etsy vintage shop, or their own online webstore, but decided that it would take up too much time. They preferred the freedom of selling on Ebay.  They can start and stop when they want and then do something else — like travel.
